The Caribbean before it was styled. Rainforest on one wing, sugar-cane flatlands and reef on the other, and almost nobody in the way.
Basse-Terre is volcanic and wet and dramatic — La Soufrière, waterfalls you walk to, black-sand coves. Grande-Terre is the opposite: dry, low, edged with reef and long pale beaches around Saint-François and Sainte-Anne. Most people choose one and take the other as a day out.
Houses here are Creole in spirit even when they are modern: deep verandas, shutters, gardens that do most of the work. Prices bear no relation to St Barth, and the scale of what you get for a family is genuinely different.
The islands off the coast are the reward for staying more than a week. Les Saintes for a day on a boat, Marie-Galante for old distilleries and empty roads, La Désirade for nothing at all.
Best time to go
December – May
Dry, breezy and green from December through May. Carnival, in February, is the real thing here rather than a show for visitors — worth planning a stay around if you like your islands loud for a week.

Why families take a house here rather than rooms.
Space, and a lot of it
Gardens run to an acre or more. Children can be outside all day without leaving the property, and there is usually somewhere for grandparents that feels separate.
The market run
Sainte-Anne on a Saturday morning: colombo spices, christophine, fish landed that night. Cooking here is part of the holiday rather than a chore, and a cook can come in for the evenings.
A boat to Les Saintes
Forty minutes across to one of the Caribbean's most sheltered bays, lunch above the water at Terre-de-Haut, and back before dark. It is the day people remember.
Rainforest at dawn
The Carbet falls and the Soufrière trails are empty before nine. Guides who grew up on the mountain make it a very different walk from the marked route.
