Neighbourhood matters more than square footage. The West Village and Tribeca give you low buildings, trees and a front door on the street. The Upper East Side gives you the park, the museums and quiet after nine. SoHo puts you in the middle of everything, for better and worse.
Townhouses are rare on the short-let market and go quickly around the holidays and the autumn auction and fashion weeks. Full-floor apartments in serviced buildings are the practical alternative and often the better one, with a doorman, a gym and a lift that opens into the flat.
What makes a New York stay work is rarely the house. It is the driver who knows the bridges, the table at eight-thirty, and someone answering the phone at eleven at night.

April – June, September – December
May and September and October are the city at its best. December has its own case: cold, lit, and unbeatable if you want the theatres and the shops. August is quiet and cheap for a reason.

Dinner without the logistics
