The Whitsundays sit behind the Great Barrier Reef, so the water between the islands is protected and the anchorages are calm. Whitehaven runs for four miles in sand so fine and so white it squeaks, and at Hill Inlet the tide pulls it into channels that change shape every few hours.
Outside, an hour or two further, the outer reef has the diving — Hardy, Bait, the bommies — and it needs a boat to be done properly rather than as a day trip. Add a helicopter morning over Heart Reef, and there is a reason people plan this one a year out.

May – October
The southern winter is the dry season, mild and outside stinger season, which is why it runs opposite to Europe. September and October are the warmest of that window.
