Nine volcanic islands a thousand miles into the Atlantic, greener than anywhere at that latitude has any right to be.
The water drops to enormous depth close to shore here, which is why whales come in so near. Sperm whales are resident year-round and the spring migration brings blues and fins through, so this is one of the few places in Europe where a whale day is genuinely reliable rather than hopeful.
Ashore, Pico has vineyards walled in black lava and a volcano to climb, São Miguel has crater lakes and thermal springs, and Faial's marina wall at Horta is painted with the marks of Atlantic crossings going back decades. Superstition says you add yours before leaving.

June – September
Warmest and calmest in July and August. Blue and sperm whales pass through in spring, with resident sperm whales present most of the year.
