Bali handles arrivals, provisioning and the days before departure, and there is plenty of reason to use them: the temples, the rice country around Ubud, the surf on the southern coast. It is the practical end of a trip that gets progressively wilder as you go east.
On the water, Nusa Penida has the drift dives and manta point, with mola mola arriving in cold upwellings in the second half of the year. Lombok and the three Gili islands are calmer and clearer, with turtles in easy snorkelling depth. From here, Komodo is a passage away.
Best time to go
May – September
The dry season is the most settled for crossing to the Gilis and Nusa Penida. Mola mola appear off Penida roughly July to October, in noticeably colder water.
