A mountain island with barely any coastal road, so most of the best of it can only be reached by sea.
The west coast is the reason to come. Red porphyry cliffs at Piana, the Scandola reserve where nothing can be built, and Girolata, a hamlet with no road to it at all. You arrive, swim, eat, and there is nothing else to do, which is the point.
The south is different again: the white limestone of Bonifacio rising above the harbour entrance, shallow sand at Rondinara and Palombaggia, and Sardinia an hour away across the strait. Inland, the villages and the mountain cooking make a good day ashore between anchorages.
Best time to go
June – September
June and September are the calmest months on the west coast. In July and August the Libeccio can blow hard around Bonifacio, which shapes where you spend the night.

Anchor below the red cliffs of the reserve, in a bay reachable only by boat or on foot.
Bonifacio
Enter the fjord-like harbour under the citadel, one of the more memorable arrivals in the Mediterranean.
Rondinara
A near-circular bay of white sand and shallow water, made for a long, unhurried lunch.
Into the mountains
Leave the yacht for a morning and go up to the villages behind Porto-Vecchio for lunch.
