The Pacific coast is a run of empty bays backed by forest. Off the Osa peninsula and Drake Bay you anchor and hear howler monkeys before breakfast; scarlet macaws cross overhead; turtles nest on some of these beaches in season. It is the rare tropical itinerary where the land is as interesting as the water.
There is surf along the coast for anyone who wants it and serious sport fishing offshore. And 300 miles out sits Cocos Island, uninhabited, with schooling hammerheads that make it one of the great dives on earth — a real passage, and only for experienced divers.
Best time to go
December – April
The Pacific dry season. Hammerhead schooling at Cocos Island is strongest in the wetter months, June to November, when the crossing is rougher.
