More than a thousand islands strung along one coast, and a walled stone town at the end of almost every day's run.
The Adriatic here is protected and the hops are short, so nobody aboard has to endure a long passage. You spend the day in the Kornati, where the islands are bare limestone and the national park keeps them empty, or in the Pakleni channel off Hvar, then come in for the evening under city walls that have stood since the fifteenth century.
Dubrovnik, Korčula, Trogir and Split are all working towns rather than resorts, and dinner tends to be in a konoba down a side street. Between them, the Pelješac peninsula grows the wine and farms the oysters, and Vis, further out, is the island that stayed closed the longest.
Best time to go
June – September
July and August are warm and busy along the Dalmatian coast. June and September give you the Kornati and the Pakleni islands with far fewer boats in them.
