The Yasawas and Mamanucas are the accessible side: reef passes, surf, empty beaches and manta rays moving through the northern channels in season. The Lau group, far to the east near Tonga, is the other extreme — almost no visitors, and the kind of week that needs planning rather than improvising.
What makes Fiji different from the rest of the Pacific is the welcome. Arriving at a village means presenting kava to the chief in the sevusevu ceremony, and it is not a performance for guests; it is how visiting works here. The soft coral diving in the Somosomo Strait is the other thing people come back for.
Best time to go
May – October
May to October is the dry season and the best window for the Lau group. Manta season in the northern Yasawa passes usually runs May to October as well.
