Lagoons the size of small seas, volcanic peaks straight out of them, and islands far enough apart that a yacht is the only way to see more than one.
Inside the reef the water is flat and pale whatever the ocean is doing outside it, so the days are spent in the lagoon: anchored off a motu at Taha'a, drifting the coral garden there, crossing to Bora Bora with the peak in front of you the whole way, going ashore on Moorea for the mountains.
The Tuamotus are the other reason to come, and a different trip entirely. Fakarava and Rangiroa are atolls with passes where the tide pulls in a wall of sharks, mantas and fish, and drift dives there are among the best on the planet. Getting between all of it takes real distance, which is exactly what a yacht solves.
Best time to go
May – October
The dry season, May to October, is the most settled. Humpbacks pass Moorea and Rurutu roughly August to October, which is worth timing for.
