The animals here never learnt to be afraid of people, and you notice it within ten minutes of the first landing.
Sea lions come to you in the water rather than away from you. Marine iguanas ignore you entirely. Boobies nest at ankle height beside the path. It is not a wildlife destination in the usual sense; it is a place where the ordinary distance between people and animals does not exist.
Access is tightly controlled. Routes, landing sites, permits and licensed naturalist guides are all fixed in advance, and only certain vessels are authorised to operate in the park. That is why the islands are still like this, and it is also why the planning has to begin far earlier than for anywhere else in this catalogue.
Best time to go
December – May
December to May is warmer with calmer seas and better snorkelling. June to November is cooler and rougher, but the nutrient-rich water brings more large marine life.
