Komodo looks nothing like the rest of Indonesia. The islands are arid savannah with sharp ridgelines falling into very deep blue water, and the dry-season light is clear and warm. Padar's ridge at sunrise is a short, steep walk from the tender and worth setting an alarm for.
The diving is driven by current. Batu Bolong and Castle Rock are pinnacles wrapped in fish; Karang Makassar is a manta highway. The dragons themselves are seen ashore with park rangers on Rinca or Komodo, usually as a morning, and the rest of the day goes back to the water.
Best time to go
April – October
The dry season, when the islands turn gold and the seas are settled. Manta sightings at Karang Makassar are good most of the year and peak in the wetter months.
