Alpine peaks rising straight out of the Arctic sea, with white beaches at their feet that look tropical until you put a hand in the water.
The chain runs a hundred miles above the Arctic Circle and the scale of it is hard to prepare for: sheer granite behind red-painted fishing villages, and sand at Haukland and Kvalvika as pale as anything in the Caribbean, at eight degrees.
These are still working islands. Reine and Henningsvær dry cod on racks the way they have for centuries, and dinner ashore reflects that. Offshore there are sea eagles most days, and whales and orcas at the right time of year. In summer the light never fully leaves, so nobody keeps to any sort of schedule.
Best time to go
June – September
Midnight sun runs late May to mid-July. From late August the nights return and the aurora becomes possible, with rougher seas outside the chain.
