An island that has been evolving on its own for eighty million years, with a northwest coast of baobabs, red cliffs and empty bays.
Nosy Be is the practical base, and from there the coastline runs for hundreds of miles with very little on it. Nosy Iranja has a sandbar joining two islands at low tide; the Radama group is largely uninhabited; Tsarabanjina sits alone with reef around it. Fishing pirogues under sail are still the normal way to move between villages here.
Ashore is the reason many people come. The lemurs, the chameleons and the forest at Lokobe exist nowhere else, and the villages and markets see very few visitors. On the east side, humpbacks calve off Île Sainte-Marie in the southern winter.
Best time to go
April – November
The dry season. Humpbacks pass Île Sainte-Marie roughly July to September, which is the single best reason to time a trip.
