A yacht changes the Maldives completely. Instead of one island for a week, you move through the atolls and stop where the water is best.
Almost everything here happens in or on the water. Channels between atolls concentrate the current and the marine life with it, so the diving and drift snorkelling is on a different level to what a single resort can reach: mantas at Hanifaru in Baa, whale sharks in South Ari, reef sharks in the passes.
Between dives the days are slow. Sandbanks surface at low tide and a table gets set on them; the surf breaks in the central atolls are uncrowded; the southern atolls see very few boats at all. It is the destination where the yacht is not transport between places but the place itself.
Best time to go
November – April
The northeast monsoon, November to April, is dry with the clearest water. Manta and whale shark sightings shift between atolls with the monsoon, so timing decides the route.
