These are big, mountainous places rather than strips of sand. Guadeloupe has the Soufrière volcano and a rainforest with waterfalls you can walk to in an hour; Martinique has Mount Pelée, the rum estates and the market at Fort-de-France. There is genuinely something to do inland, which is unusual in the Caribbean.
Between the two lie Les Saintes, and the anchorage in the bay at Terre-de-Haut is the one guests remember: a small French village, a hill fort above it, no cars to speak of. The Cousteau reserve off Pigeon Island, on the Guadeloupe side, has the diving.
Best time to go
December – May
The dry season, carême, runs from December to April and is the reliable window. Carnival in February is worth planning a day ashore around.
