Yachting with mountains on both sides instead of a horizon. The fjords run so deep inland that you anchor below cliffs, not off a coast.
The western fjords are navigable a remarkable distance from the sea — Geiranger, Nærøyfjord, the Sognefjord arms — with water hundreds of metres deep right up to the rock and waterfalls coming off the walls above you. Nothing about it resembles a Mediterranean summer, which is the point.
The days are structured around the land: a helicopter onto a glacier, a walk up to a farm ledge above the fjord, salmon rivers, a village with a jetty and one restaurant. In June the light barely stops, so evenings run long and the water stays completely still.
Best time to go
June – August
June and July have the longest light and the meltwater still running down the cliffs. August is warmer ashore and slightly drier.

Geirangerfjord
Deep water beneath vertical walls, with the Seven Sisters falling straight past the yacht.
Nærøyfjord
The narrowest of the arms, only a few hundred metres across in places.
Glacier days
Leave from the anchorage by helicopter or on foot and be back aboard for dinner.
Midnight light
In June the day never really ends, and the fjord goes glass-flat at two in the morning.
