More marine species have been recorded here than anywhere else on earth, and there is almost no way to reach it except by boat.
The landscape is jungle-covered limestone rising straight out of green water in thousands of small mushroom-shaped islets — Wayag and Piaynemo are the ones people climb for the view, and the lagoons between them are best explored by kayak at first light.
Underwater, the Dampier Strait pulls current through channels dense with fish, and the manta cleaning stations there are reliable in season. There is no infrastructure in Raja Ampat, no hotels of consequence, no roads. That is the whole reason to bring a yacht: it is the only way to spend real time here rather than passing through.

October to April is the calmer window and the usual season for boats here. Manta aggregations around Dampier Strait are strongest from December to March.
