Granite islands rather than coral ones, which is why the beaches here look like nowhere else in the tropics.
The inner islands are old continental rock, worn into boulders the size of buildings and set against white sand. Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue is the famous one, but the whole group is like this, and the distances between Mahé, Praslin, Curieuse and Félicité are short enough to move on a whim.
Go further and the trip changes character. The outer atolls — Alphonse, the Amirantes, Aldabra at the far edge — take days of open water to reach and see almost no one. Aldabra in particular is a restricted UNESCO site with giant tortoises in numbers found nowhere else, and requires permits arranged well ahead.
Best time to go
April – May, October – November
The two changeovers between monsoons give the calmest, clearest water. December to March is windier from the northwest, May to September from the southeast.
