Water so shallow and so pale that the boat looks like it is floating on air, an hour's flight from Miami.
The Exumas run for a hundred miles and hold something like three hundred cays, almost all of them empty. Sandbars surface at low tide and are gone again by evening, which is when lunch tends to happen — a table set on sand that will not exist in four hours. Between them: Staniel Cay, the swimming pigs at Big Major, the grottos, Compass Cay.
It is the strongest destination in the Caribbean for anyone who wants the water toys in constant use, and it is the easiest to reach from Florida. Eleuthera and Harbour Island, further north, add pink sand, a village worth walking and somewhere to have a proper dinner.
Best time to go
November – May
December to April is the classic window. Winter cold fronts can push through for a day or two, so the route often gets adjusted on the morning rather than in advance.

Set up on a bank that surfaces at low tide and is underwater again by the evening.
