Stone Town is the anchor of the week: carved doors, a market that has been trading across this ocean for a thousand years, Omani and Indian architecture pressed into narrow lanes, and food in the evening at Forodhani. It is a real town rather than a resort strip, and it takes a day to begin to read.
Offshore, Mnemba's atoll has the snorkelling and dolphins, and Pemba, further north, has walls and drop-offs that serious divers rate highly. Most people arrive here having come off safari in the Serengeti or Ruaha, which is the sequence that makes the trip work.

Two dry windows either side of the rains. June to October is cooler and pairs naturally with the mainland safari season.
